West Indies New captain Nicholas Puran
Nicholas Puran is the new captain of West Indies in ODI and T20 format. Cricket West Indies (CWI) made the announcement in an official statement on Tuesday. The sudden retirement of Kieron Pollard forced the Caribbeans to choose a new captain.
Left-arm wicketkeeper Batter Puran has been Pollard's vice-captain since last year. The 26-year-old captain has been given the captaincy of two formats for the full term till this year's upcoming T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup.
"We believe Puran is ready to lead the team in white ball cricket," said West Indies Cricket Director Jimmy Adams. The selection panel thinks he is mature enough as a player. Besides, his experience, performance and the respect of everyone in the team is also a big controller in this case. '
However, in Pollard's absence, Puran has already had the experience of captaining the West Indies. He captained the side in the Twenty20 series against the West Indies at home in 2021. This time, after becoming the captain for a full term, Puran is getting Shy Hope as a deputy in ODIs.
Puran has hit eight fifty and one century in ODI cricket so far. He also has eight half-centuries to his name in Twenty20 International cricket. The Marquette batter was the first to announce his arrival by scoring 303 runs in six matches in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup.
